Access Card

A plastic card the size of a credit card with a microchip or magnetic strip which contains encoded data and read by an electronic device.

Biometric Data

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) defines it as “personal data resulting from specific technical processing relating to the physical.

Bluetooth

A wireless technology which uses short-wavelength UHF radio waves in the industrial, scientific and medical radio bands.

Cabinet

A cabinet is a box-shaped piece of furniture with doors and/or drawers for storing miscellaneous items.

Cam Lock

A type of fastener often used in cabinet construction which holds cabinets securely together without affecting the outward appearance.

Child Safety Locks

Special-purpose locks for cabinets and drawers that are designed to help prevent children from opening them and potentially hurting themselves.

Chubb Detector Lock

A type of lever tumbler lock patented in 1927 that has an integral security feature which frustrates unauthorized access attempts and indicates that the lock has been interfered with.

Combination Lock

A lock that opens through a sequence of a dial or set of dials marked with letters or numbers.

Cylinder Lock

A lock with the keyhole and tumbler mechanism in a cylinder.

Deadbolt

A bolt engaged by turning a knob or key.

Deadlatch

A spring-bolt latch in which the bolt is deadlocked against end pressure but may be opened by either the knob or key.

Electric Strike

An access control device used for doors which replaces the fixed strike faceplate often used with a latch bar or keeper.

Electronic lock

A locking device which operates by means of electric current.

Euro Profile Cylinder

A type of cylinder design commonly used in Europe. It uses a single piece of metal to connect the sides of the lock.

Key

A small piece of shaped metal with incisions cut to fit a particular lock, which is inserted into a lock and turned to open or close it.

Key Duplication

Refers to the process of recreating a key based on an existing key.

Key Fob

A word used to describe a key chain or several other similar items or devices.

Keycard Lock

A lock operated by a keycard, a flat, rectangular plastic card. The card stores a pattern that the door mechanism accepts before opening the lock.

Keypad

A set of buttons for operating an electronic device, other equipment, or locks.

Knob Locks

A door lock with a spring bolt operated by a knob and a deadbolt.

Lever Handle Locks

A type of lock that use levers to prevent the bolt from moving in the lock.

Lever Tumbler Lock

A type of lock that uses a set of levers that keeps the bolt from moving inside the lock.

Latch

A bar made of metal with a catch and lever used for fastening a door.

Lockers

A cupboard or cabinet with a door that can be locked and that is used to store items.

Locksmithing

Is the science of making locks.

Luggage lock

Is a lock used to prevent luggage from opening by accident and serves as protection from theft.

Magnetic keyed lock

A locking mechanism which uses magnets as part of the locking and unlocking mechanism.

Magnetic lock

Also called a maglock, this consists of an electromagnet and an armature plate.

Mortise Lock

A lockset inside the body recess of a door.

Padlock

A detachable lock hanging by a pivoted hook on the object fastened.

PIN Code

Personal Identification Number is used for validating electronic transactions. Usually 4-8 digit numerals.

Pin tumbler lock

A lock mechanism that uses pins that opens only with the correct key

Police lock

A police lock is a type of high-security door lock.

Protector lock

Also called the “moveable lock”, it was an early 1850s lock invention and was created to be the “unpickable lock”.

Remote Keyless System

An entry system that controls access to a building or vehicle without using a traditional mechanical key.

RFID

Radio Frequency Identification is a form of wireless communication that uses electromagnetic or electrostatic coupling to uniquely identify something or someone.

Rim Lock

A lock fitted to the door with a box fitted into the doorjamb.

Smart Lock

Is an electromechanical lock designed to lock and unlock a door when it receives instructions from any device like a smartphone.

Strike Plate

A metal plate affixed to a door jamb for the bolt of the door. When the door is closed, the bolt extends into the hole and holds the door closed.

Time Lock

A lock that opens only during a set time.

Wafer Tumbler Lock

A lock that uses a set of flat wafers open only when the correct key is inserted.

Warded Lock

A type of lock that uses a set of obstructions or wards.
